Robert Johnston Gilliland '36

Attorney and Community Leader

Moving to Hutchinson in 1924 when his father became principal of the high school, Gilliland soon became a prominent member of the community. With the exception of time spent serving his country in World War II, Mr. Gilliland has made the community of Hutchinson and its people his life's work.

Gilliland attended Hutchinson Community College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas in 1940 and a law degree in 1941. He entered the Navy Officers Training program in 1941 and passed the Kansas Bar exam in 1942. Gilliland received his commission as an Ensign in the Navy and reported for active duty in the Amphibious Force of the Navy on Aug. 13, 1942. He was stationed in the Western Pacific where he was involved in three amphibious landings of troops and supplies.

After returning to Hutchinson, Gilliland opened a law office where he has practiced law for 56 years. His community service accomplishments are numerous and include his position as co-chairman of the American Legion committee for the first National Junior College Athletic Association Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson and President of the USD 308 School Board.

Gilliland's distinguished legal career and extensive contributions to his community assure him a place on the Wall of Honor.
